The philosophy of favoring Playstation over Xbox

Due to some recent events I have been forced to closely examine my preference for the Playstation brand over the Xbox brand.  Trusting vaguely in my impressions and gut feelings is fine in a casual day-to-day context, but once you "go public" with your opinions you are expected to explain yourself, and rightly so.

To date I have always avoided explaining myself, because I knew it would be a difficult task.  I know that my opinions are not based on a spreadsheet of numbers somewhere.  They are not founded in a game genre that is entirely missing from one platform or the other.  I knew that examining my opinions and impressions closely, understanding them, and then expressing them clearly would not be easy, but the time has come to try.

As I began to seriously consider the topic I  had to admit to myself I can not entirely separate my feelings about the Xbox from my feelings about Microsoft (you can't argue that they are not closely related).  This concession gave me the key; it was the breakthrough I needed to begin understanding my opinions.

This realization led me to pondering the culture in which games are created (corporate culture, gamming culture, media culture, national culture), the big business, big budget production process, and inevitably, a resulting limit in scope of inspiration.  A good analogy here would be the film industry.  As Hollywood becomes more and more of a streamlined moneymaking machine, the films resulting from the process drift further and further away from film as art, from film as boundary pushing or revolutionary.

So what does all this have to do with games?  Well, big business has a proven track record of gravitating towards the lowest common denominator, for sticking to proven formulas over and over again, for minimizing risk while maximizing profit.  And who could blame them for that, right?  It's good business.

Now I acknowledge that the big-production games of today need to be commercially viable to even exist, but I do not want my video games (or my movies) to come entirely from business.  I want at least some portion of the game to come from artistic sensibilities.  I want at least some portion of the game to come from artists rather than a money-making formula.

Ok, so how does this relate directly to Microsoft and the Xbox 360 or its predecessor?  Well this is where we soundly enter the realm of opinion.  It is my opinion that, based on what I have seen for the Xbox platform so far, that Microsoft is doing an excellent job of minimizing risk while maximizing profit.  So far I have seen very little content that strays all that far from proven formula (with the possible exception of some of the XBL content).

My feelings regarding content available for the Xbox platform can be nicely summed up by paraphrasing the lead designer of Bioshock.  He essentially said that it's like most game designers have read one book and seen one movie in their lives, which is "Lord of the Rings" and "Aliens" or variations thereof.  They both have great content, but you need some variety.  In other words, I love "Aliens" and "Lord of the Rings", but I don’t want to keep seeing them remade over and over again with slight variations.  As long as game makers for the Xbox consoles continue to draw from such a limited pool of inspiration, it will not matter if they are making an FPS, an RPG, a flight simulator, or a roll-playing FPS flight-sim.  Aesthetically the game will come out feeling stale.

As an aside, I am well aware of the irony of referencing Bioshock (which premiered on the 360) in this article.  But as a friend of mine said, it is the exception that proves the rule.

But wait!  What about Sony?  Aren't they a big profit maximizing corporation as well?  I would not even consider trying to argue that Sony is not also a "big evil company".  I would also not dream of trying to support the unsupportable position that the Playstation platform has not prominently featured some huge, big money game productions (just look at the numbers for the Final Fantasy franchise).

What Sony does have, however, is a proven track record.  They have a long history of delivering a wide range of diverse titles that constantly push the envelope on game inspiration, game play, etc.  They have done this for decades while being a huge corporate entity the entire time.

Microsoft has no such track record, not yet anyway.  Even for a heavily biased guy like me they could still win me over by building such a track record, but they failed to do so with the original Xbox and with the exception of some home-brew initiatives they have going (which I consider a different issue) I haven’t seen them heading in that direction yet.

My concerns about games in the hands of Microsoft can be summed up nicely by quoting Steve Jobs: "Microsoft isn't evil, they just have no taste".  They can make software that works.  They can even make powerful software.  But rarely is their software graceful, elegant, or a pleasure to use.  Their products are competent and commercially successful, but rarely are they inspired or creative.

As a friend of mine pointed out these criticisms only directly apply to the design of the Xbox consoles themselves and Microsoft's first party titles.  He went on to say that third party game studios could decide to release their creative and artistic games on the 360; there's nothing about the platform that precludes innovation.  To some extent, however, Microsoft does create the gamer culture for their systems by the way they do their marketing and by the tone of their first party flagship games.

Ok, so Microsoft sets the tone for their consoles, but is that enough to explain why it feels like there are Xbox-style games and Playstation-style games in the world?  At this point we come back to culture.

Based purely on sales numbers it is clear that the Xbox is an American system.  It is a poor last-place seller in Japan.  Europe is a much closer race, but parts of it (as in some European countries) have the Xbox soundly last.  Only here in America is the Xbox clearly ahead in sales.  Is this somehow significant?  If American gamer culture is different, is that because of American developers, or American gamers, or both?

My guess is that Americans in general have the same broad range of interests as Europeans and Japanese do, but that fewer of these demographics play games here in the US.  Gaming is simply less culturally accepted here.  It is still largely perceived as a pastime for young males.  So would it be surprising to discover that Microsoft's money making formulas are based on less varied demographics than what we might find in other parts of the world?

Sony's history of being all over the map with their games, of constantly pursing innovation, may simply be a natural result of trying to peg and please a much wider range of gamer demographics.

At the end of the day it is simply not a simple issue.  I am left with trepidation regarding a Microsoft gaming console of any generation.  As you can see these reservations are not based on lists of games, they are not based on a comparison of consol features.  I do not even need to consider exclusive titles or killer apps.  Rather my opinions come from a complex lattice of economic and cultural considerations and, of course, history.

Feel free to prove me wrong one day Microsoft.  In all honesty, I hope you do.  There was a time long, long ago when I was not even aware that a console called the "Playsation" even existed.  That consol long ago worked its way onto my radar and eventually convinced me to buy one based purely on compelling content that I did not see anywhere else.  I will make every effort to give Microsoft the same opportunity, but so far they have failed to impress me.

Love the end where you speak directly to microsoft, offering them another 'chance' to try and prove your 'gut feeling' wrong. That's hilarious. That is some real freaky sh*t right there. A long, long time ago there was no internet, and you would've had to write that nonsensical drivel down on your note pad, in your bedroom. You would have been too embarassed, and rightly so, to show it to anyone, and would never have committed pen to paper in the first place. How 'gut feelings' have changed over the years; many thanks to the internet for that one - your guts should have been exploding out your ***hole on this bloated, melodramatic, lonesome, and sloppy piece; trying to warn you that it's still embarassing, regardless of the medium...

I have to agree. I felt at least with the first generation machine Microsoft produced a box capable of playing 50 different modes of any first person shooter available. I want innovation. I want to be wowed, or a new idea. If I wanted to play the exact same kind of game, i would find one i liked and play it over and over again. Please give me something new. I enjoy the big bugdet blockbusters too, but I would like some innovation every now and again. Otherwise, I could just get a nice pc.

Well I have to disagree with you across the board. I feel that Sony; having been to the top of the mountain has become complacent with their product. While Microsoft is in it for the money and expanded market share they are still improving the industry through competition. Sony has done some great things but they have begun to fall short of their former glory. Microsoft may not have success in other countries especially Japan but does anyone expect otherwise. Sony and Nintendo are based out of Japan and have a long history there so of course they will do greatly better sales wise. Microsoft is an American company and is doing much better in the us than both Sony and Nintendo. Neither of these things should shock us. As for games some of the greatest games have come from the Xbox camp. The halo series, bioshock, fable, Mass effect, Max Payne ectra. While most of them are RPG FPS games that should not be a problem or a complaint for anyone. If those games are fun for you then go for Xbox if not then look for Sony but that is why there are multiple platforms. Microsoft is filling a niche that had never been fully filled by any other company. As for proven track record, Sony and Nintendo have that but to say that Microsoft has yet to prove itself is foolish. They have been going at it for 7+ years now and have said that its only the beginning. Their track record is just as impressive as the competitions. Over all quit hating on each others products because the gamers are the winners in this generation. Microsoft rules and so does Sony and Nintendo. Capitalism rules most of all. thanks

Well put. I have similar reservations - that's why when the next-gen consoles came out, I made the switch from Xbox to PS3. Considering Microsoft's utter predictability at following the 'bottom line' and avoiding innovation as a result, I'm very happy that I did.

I could not disagree more, I think you are one of the many long time Sony fans who are letting their nostalgia for the great old Sony cloud your judgment.

MS is the new leader in gaming because of they have the very thing you claim they do not, they have fresh new games, not more of the same button masher God of War style classics, and not a set of sequels that are on their 13th release ala Final Fantasy, the Japanese frankly have ran out of ideas. You would never get a Mass Effect from a Playstation console, let alone a Bioshock, but I guess to guys like you Uncharted is far more creative, a game many refer to as Dude Raider. It baffles me how you can possibly say that MS has not demonstrated a desire for innovative games and Sony has, I just dont see it, all of Sonys upcoming big games are sequels! Only one of MS's big games last year was, Halo3.

The fact is MS is better for gaming, the 360 is designed with developers in mind, this allows a steady and quick flow of great games that are less costly and easier to push to the limit. MS has cash to back larger and more risky or innovative games, MS has XBL, MS has proven they WILL pay the cash to bring their customers the big titles, and MS listens to and communicates with its fanbase, XBL is what it is today because of ideas given to MS by its users. So how on earth can anyone argue that Sony is better for gaming than MS?

this is something i have to agree with. who gave us ico and shadow of the colossus? who waits until gt is done before shipping it? who gives their devs pretty much complete freedom? and also, who gave us the system with okami?

yes ms makes solid games. and yes third parties do make solid games for them. but those are solid games that just 1 up the last solid game. what were the most original big games from the 360? bioshock, mass effect, and gears. bioshock is system shock, mass effect is another bioware game, and gears is killswitch. something wrong there?

and guess what, the big actually original games like assassin's creed is on ps3.

Interesting that you have the guts to write such an article, but you lost me completely when you said: What Sony does have, however, is a proven track record. They have a long history of delivering a wide range of diverse titles that constantly push the envelope on game inspiration, game play, etc. They have done this for decades while being a huge corporate entity the entire time. -- But then did not give a single example. I am not denying that you are right, but examples would bolster your position. I also feel that Sony is in a much better position to innovate, or at least has been, being the market leader for the last two generations. Microsoft, on the other hand, is still trying to break into a market that has traditionally been dominated but Japanese companies (Sega, Nintendo, and Sony) Although they are reactionary on some fronts, the Xbox and 360 have brought innovation into the video game market that Microsoft's competitors have copied-- Xbox Live, for example, showed that online gaming was important, and is still the best Online service for consoles. And, although they inexplicably backed away from this with the 360, the xbox included a hard drive in every system, something that allowing developers freedom they didn't even know they needed. So Microsoft HAS innovated in the videogame market, just not with niche games like Sony. BUT, if you look at some of the unique games MS did attempt on the original Xbox, (Sneakers, Phantom Dust, Otogi, Kakuto Chogin, etc.) you'll notice something-- none of them sold.

Are you joking? You realise that Microsoft doesn't make the majority of xbox games, right? So if you have a problem with xbox games, take it up with the developers.
Why not be honest and just say, you prefer sony because you had it first and you didn't like the xbox in the first place, so now you're being stubborn and liking the system that doesn't have as many good games. Although that will change this year (unless we have a lot more delays, which I'm betting my money on cough...final fantasy XIII...gag)

One more thing, if you want to judge based on track record than you should look at the entire track record, not just the parts that make you feel all fuzzy inside. Sony also has a long track record of over promising and under delivering, Sony has a record of putting the Japanese market ahead of the rest of the world, heck Sony put their desire to win a DVD format war ahead of it's gaming fans and the PS3 itself. Sony has a history of telling out right lies to its customers, (rumble and motion cant exist in the same controller my @ss) And Sony has proven that if the going gets rough then the customer gets screwed, (see: back to back price drops, and no backwards compatibility). When the going got rough for 360 customers they got a 3 year replacement policy. And come on, if it were not for XBL do you really think Sony would be embracing Home, or any online functionality at all, or would they just still be promising it? Well they are still just promising Home after all.

Don't pay any mind to these XBots, for they have none. You hit the nail on the head. Do you realize that the 360 had precisely ONE worthwhile RPG in its entire first year (Oblivion)? That there was precisely ONE noteworthy platformer (Kameo)? That there wasn't a single strategy game? It was all racers, shooters, and sports ports--stripped down sports ports at that.

Yeah, it's all 3rd party development. Why is that? Because MS doesn't really make their own games. They made Kameo. They do PGR and Forza. There are a couple others, but the names escape me. Meanwhile Sony has a massive machine of 1st party developers. But you can't just blame the 3rd party developers because MS has a big say in what they produce, and MS wants the safe route every time.

And to the guy who said all of Sony's big games coming out this year are all sequels: LittleBigPlanet (the most innovative game in probably a decade), Infamous, The Getaway, 2 Days 2 Vegas, White Knight Chronicles...I could go on forever. Why? Because by the end of this year, the PS3 will have more games out for it than the 360 in spite of MS's yearlong head start.

And MS isn't the new leader in video games...Nintendo has reclaimed their old spot. And by the end of the year, MS will be in 3rd.

Sorry, MS is the new leader, check the numbers, 360 sells games, 360 is lead platform, the 360 accounted for something like 40% of revenue in all of gaming, this at a time gaming is bigger than ever, if it were not for MS gaming would be in trouble, Sony abandoned it to go fight Toshiba in a format war, and Nintendo only makes money for itself with all its first party only successes. (ironic that it is the foreign companies acting like greedy evil American corporate giants) Wake up people, times are changing, they always do, Sony can't stay on top forever, you little cult members can use terms like xbot all you want, but it is you who have literally fallen in love with a large japanese corporation, most "xbots" have no love for MS, we just love games and hate lies.

C'mon gamers let's be real! ...is it the console you play or the games? I'm a gamer and love quality epic titles with high production values. Microsoft are a cold and calculated company because they released an unfinished, undertested and a design that wreaks of yesterday. But on the plus side they have great 3rd party support. The Playstation 3 is very much tomorrows technology ready today. With blu-ray they have a masterstroke and are very fortunate to have WON the Hi-Def format. Developers have said the limits of the DVD format are restrictive. Examples are GTA4 delayed disc space being a 360 problem, lack of hardware knowledge being PS3's. Sadly the 360 is reaching it's peak, and Microsoft know it. What now for the loyal Xbox userbase who were so badly treated with the original Xbox's premature death. Think Microsoft are going to give 360 users longevity?...the short answer is definately NO. Microsoft don't care about gaming as a culture, they simply care about marketshare and dominaton. 2008/2009 will be an important year for Sony. The PS3 will outpace 360 unquestionably, but will at that point Microsoft release 360's successor early and bury the embarrisingly unreliable 360 to scupper Sony in the stride...much to the dismay of the loyal 360 fans. If you think MS care about you as a gamer, smell the coffee

I don't see how anyone can argue that Xbox games are original. Let's look at the 4 best-selling titles of last year. Bioshock, Gears of War, Halo 3, and Mass Effect. Halo 3 is just Halo 2 with updated visuals that got quickly blown away by COD4. Mass Effect? It's just another game Bioware built off the successful formula of Star Wars: KOTOR I and II. IT'S ALREADY BEEN DONE BEFORE, FOR CHRISSAKE! And Gears of War is just a third-person shooter with a fluid cover system. Guess what else has that same cover system? Rainbow Six Vegas! GRAW2! And a lot of other great shooters that apparently don't deserve any attention because they're missing the huge, spinning chainsaw bayonets Tong

The only slightly original title was Bioshock. And that's only because those magical ice waves and fireballs come from your hands instead of a gun.

Pac-man neither corporation really cares about us, dont kid yourself, xbox was dropped because the sales stalled plus it was never going to stop losing money on each console sold. 360 makes money, it will be here a while, the rest of what you said is just ignorance, the hardware on both consoles are the same in power, the limits on 360 are matched by other limits on PS3(memory)(weird architecture of the cell) technical right ups on them both by actual engineers (not nostalgic Sony fanboy journalists) have proven that both are equal, and the 360 is arguably more powerful due to more accessable power. So get off it, neither is much better that the other. Shooters are one of the biggest genres out there now and sony would be stupid not to get a piece of that action.

As for sony playing the sequels game, those games are hyped because they are proven. Everyone's looking at the new MGS,FF etc, and sony
is capitalizing on that fact, but at the same time they invest on new projects such as *on their first year alone* Resistance, Motorstorm, Lair,Heavenly Sword, Uncharted and Folklore. Granted not all of them did well, but at least they tried.

Also I'm not saying MS doesn't innovate and take risks Viva Pinata is still one of the most colorful this gen. I'm just pointing out this fact because you make it seem like Sony isn't trying.

Let me inform you on one thing bruce. All the IP's you mentioned where all shooters. Also, sony is not the one making games and neither is microsoft. First we will start with shooters.

Number one UT3 is a timed exclusive so your xbox 360 is getting it as well. 2 The pie needs to be split in many diffrent directions to appel to all people. The Xbox so far is only appeling to those that like shooters. You cannot deny that nearly every xbox fanboy is a Halo fanboy right? Because Microsoft gave the Xbox a year head start, that only builted a much larger Halo fanbase only to announce Halo would be the most popular video game in the world. Despite those that phrase is, their is enough people that actually played other first person shooters to announce it has a very average game because that's exactly what it is. That doesn't matter of course to anyone else because they are not a PC gamer like me to even pay attention because it's more popular then Jesus Christ.

Next we have Gears Of War, Mass Effect and Bioshock. Here's the problem. They are all shooters. You can deny it all you want, but these 4 most popular titles are just about the only titles for the Xbox 360 getting the most phrase. Tell me, what exactly makes you think that there is any orignality what-so-ever in these games? I played them all and Mass Effect is about the only title worth giving a damn about. Bioshock and Gears is good on paper, but the depth in it is subpar. As far as exclusives go, this is about as good as the xbox is going to expand with Lost Oddesy, Fable 2 and Ninja Gaiden 2 is able to keep it on it's toes.

Now on to Sony. I've heard it god knows how many people keep saying that it has no games. Sonys Playstation has always have the biggest selection of games opposed to other consoles. We have been proven the last two generations that their library is huge. Why should we be short handed this generation? What makes you think that they are going to have the least games? People have doubted and underestimated them time and time again that they are going to fail no matter what and they keep proving us wrong so why should it be any diffrent?

Every console is going to be shorthanded when they launch and when the PS3 launched, there were only two exclusives worth buying. Resistance Fall Of Man and Motorstorm. In only one year we got the following, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Warhawk, Lair, Heavenly Sword, Rachet and Clank:Tools or Destruction, Eye Of Judgement, Folklore and Uncharted Drakes Fortune. 9 Exclusives in one year so far witch is pretty impressive but some would say otherwise. Only one game from the list is back catalouge and the rest are brand new IPs. This year is going to be a big come back for sony. Number one, The Blu-ray format has brung HD-DVD to it's knees after the Warner Announcment witch is a big smack in the face. Number 2 we are getting a mix of new IPs and Sequels alike. Take it how you like but the past generations Final Fantasy has been on has been a huge deciding factor of a consoles success. When it first moved to the PS1 agaisn't the N64, the N64 fell short because the limits of the cartridge. No huge games were able to be developed on the N64 because of this and that's going to be the same for this generation. DVD is last gen tech bringing the Xbox360 to a bottleneck. Next is Metal Gear Solid 4. A number of fans are awaiting a closure and is currently the most anticpated right. With those two megahits out of the way we have quite a list of what we are getting this year.

Grand Turismo 5
Getaway 3
Motorstorm 2
Resistance 2
Afrika
Eyedentify
Valkryie of the Battlefield
Little Big Planet
Haze
Infamous
God Of War 3
Star Ocean 4

You cannot say to me that Sony is milking out more of the same when it's clearly the opposite, We are actually seeing games making use of the eye toy. Eye Of Judgement was the first to pull it off. Eyedentify, Im not sure where the project is going since we haven't hear anything since 2005 is also orignal. Afrika and Little Big Planet. That makes 4 totally orginal projects. This is so far the beginning of what we know and what's to come. The next E3 will provide us with more information and for all we know, more games.

PS3 still excels in all fronts and not just focusing on the shooter department like the Xbox 360. Im talking about creativity, Action/Adventure games, Platformers and Role Playing games. All witch fanboys always neglect to mention and try to shadow it with lies and propaganda. I'll tell you what my tastes are. I've had a history of the Metal Gear, Star ocean and Final Fantasy so why should I buy a Xbox 360? That's right, I'll be locking myself out of not being able to do so and neither does a million others want to take that chance. Besides, a RPG fanatic like myself cannot be convinced that the Xbox is going to have more JRPG's then the Playstation 3. It's already doing horrible in Japan.

In conclusion, I like my games that have a little bit of more veriaty and depth. Besides, I've always used my PC for my shooter needs so guess what? Im not missing out on Gears Of War and Bioshock and even Crysis witch neither console has. Other then that, when I want to play a shooter nowadays, I turn to Unreal Tournament 3 on the PC and use my Playstaton 3 for everything else. Suprisingly, this whole post is dedicated on just games. Not the actual system itself witch alot of other sony fanboys try to make an excuse of. No matter, games is where as system is at.

I have to give credit to Chris Smile you really hit the nail on the head........Bruce Cough Fanboy Cough you really went wrong when you slated the Most Popular and successful RPG series ever created, you then audacity to say that Sony are using old franchises.....Have you not thought maybe thats because they are usually most successful, According to your rules then every game should finish after the first installment...O.o....sequels normally appear because the first installment gathers a fanbase, Final fantasy now has a 5-10 million strong fanbase, all or most of them want the series to go on. Like your overrated trash Halo, it to made a fanbase, Hypocritical of you though to slag off Sony's titles and yet your highest Seller is from an old franchise.....Difference between FF and Halo is that with every Final Fantasy that comes out so does a new innovation with it........Halo just gets shinier. Where you Xbots go wrong is you only see and hear what you want to, you actually believe that Microsoft might have actually outdone themselves and looked to be beating Sony.....Wrong......You are the one that should wake up.....Where did you get your information that 360 was leading...LOL Wii is firmly up there......PS3 is selling at a faster rate than 360 did at this time.....We have passed your half way sales mark .......Oh and the major news is that it was all done with "No Games" in other words the name Sony its self managed to sell 9-10 million consoles. You want proof of a good track record.......Are you completely Thick did you miss the last generation and the one before that.....Ever since Sony came into the market they have dominated, so you mention a few hick ups....Pot and Kettle comes to mind i remember Gates stating that the 360 was the most reliable console on the market....Tell that to PS3's 0.1% fail rate and the 360's still ever so reliable 10% fail rate...........You want to know why Sony are developing FPS's, Its a little thing called marketing, What is selling the 360's....FPS's......If PS3 is offering FPS's as well as their all inspiring innovative lineup as usual there will be no reason to buy a 360. You commented That the 360 will be here a long time......wrong again....gates had already announced that games were in development for the "new Xballs".....I stick with Sony because its potentially always the best option and this generation will prove it as always....Go back to Halo while i play some real games Smile

geez why are fanboys so damn thick....seriously
i own both a 360 and PS3 and i totally agree with this article
i generally play my 360 for tha FPS's released on it and thats mainly it
the PS3 however has a wider selection (not just FPS's)
game like R&C: ToD, Uncharted, Eye of Judgement, Heavenly Sword are all great games that appeal to more than just 16yo+ males, which is mainly wat tha 360 appeals to
but dont get me wrong, i love my 360, and it has really great games (bioshock, halo 3, COD4) but have u noticed they're all targeted to tha same group?
and yes i know theres gonna be stupid fanboys saying 'but wat about games like Viva Pinata and Scene It?'
they're attempts at trying to appeal to tha casual gamer, but hav u ever known sumone that bought a 360 to play those kind of games? my point exactly
now im not saying that the 360 is a bad console at all, it sells incredibly well in the US, but its because i think that the 360 is the 'hardcore' console of all 3 consoles (with the Wii tha casual, and the PS3 tha slightly hardcore/casual) and to prove my point look at tha software sales of tha FPS's released on tha 360, they all outsell tha PS3, because their tha hardcore crowd and usually got out and buy the game on release day

Ok you are right to some extent that Sony's game have better artistic feel to them, so all of their games like Jak series, R&C series, the FF series have it. But the gameplay I mean there is nothing out of ordinary in the gameplay. Most of the Sonys game have some wiered gameplay themes attached to them and that makes you withdraw from the game early on. Like I played MGs3 it has tremendously good story line but the gameplay abnoramalities make some times the game hard and frustrating that you will even withdraw. Also GT4 looked remarkable but the handling was very bad. So goes for FF, Jak and R&C. Also some feature like taking cover, holding while sniping, choosing nature of your chracter are first to hit Microsft's console.
I have one way to prove this I was Sony's boy and loved my PS2 but having 65 games I end only 8 in 2years. But on 360 I have 40 titles I have completed 25 out of them in 1.5 years. also withmylast console I felt that I need some thing differnt some fast paced game and wasnot contented with my PS2 with always a wiered RPG thrown in the market. But on 360 I never had a low moment, and article says abt diversity but I found more diversity here on 360 (100% sure abt this one).

I own the 360, and am now at a point where I have decided enough is enough after the recent live outage problems.
A message to all those that say that m$ have covered themselves in the small print, and that we pay for the service - warts and all and that we "agreed" to the state of the service prior to taking it up.
My question is - what choice did we have in this when "deciding" to use xbox live?

We are hardly in any position to argue with m$ about whether we use their service or not. We either:
a) pay for their service on their terms and conditions, or
b) we don't play on xbox live.

That is hardly fair in any shape or form.

Something else which has been bothering me recently is the increasing amount of in-game advertising which seems to be appearing through live.
This is all extra revenue that m$ is making through a service they charge us for - meaning that they are shafting us in every way possible.

Since we don't have an alternative to xbox live, we have to put up and shut up. Is that fair?

m$ needs to do one of two things:
a) subsidise the service by at least 50%, given that they make money through in game ads, or
b) better still - make xbox live free

Since having this trouble with xbox live i got thinking about the only other option we have available: PS3.

The two main arguments for not getting a PS3 are:
1) expensive to purchase
2) no games

Exploring point 1, I have realised that actually, the PS3 isn't expensive at all. Let's break down the real cost of owning a 360:

* Premium 360 - around £250
* rechargeable battery pack - around £15
* wi-fi - around £60
* HD-DVD drive (granted optional - but including it to be on a par with what the PS3 is) - £130
* annual subscription to xbox live - £40. (assuming 5 years of using the xbox - £200)

PS3 is available for around £300 now with an inbuilt bluray player.
Xbox 360: approx. £625

Does the 360 sound like a cheaper option now?

Exploring point 2 - yes there are games that are very poor right now, but there are plenty of games that are just as good as the 360.
The number of AAA titles about to appear on the PS3 is impressive, and fingers crossed they deliver.

I personally won't be looking to get a PS3 until around the end of the year when my live subscription expires - i see no reason to renew it.

For the benefit of people from the states - we pay twice as much for games and xbox live than you do.
we pay the equivalent of $80 for live - now do you feel my rage??

I feel the same way the author does. I've always been a Sony fan boy, I mean, not an Xbox basher, but always a fan of Sony's products and style of gaming. I don't think that Xbox Live really provides a service so great that you should have to pay money per month to use it, considering that there is no visible difference between connectivity, friends, and general usability from Playstation Network. Honestly, what do you get that is so much more innovative when you play on Xbox Live? I just want to be able to communicate with friends, play games online, and buy content from the store. I get all of that with PSN, so why should i pay for Xbox Live?

Regarding game availability and choice, the PS3 has definitely released games that suit me well, and I enjoy my Ps3 games. Be them exculsives or not, I feel that any games that I can enjoy are worth it. And not to sound like a broken record, but PS3 does have quite a few good looking exclusives coming out this year, such as Haze, Killzone 2, and LittleBigPlanet. I think when the author was talking about style and creativity, he was talking with regard to games such as LittleBigPlanet. To be honest, LittleBigPlanet looks to be the most innovative and creative game of the year.

If were talking about actual gameplay, I think that the Playstation suits a lot of people like me better. I've always been used to the feel of the Playstation controller in my hands, and I feel at home gaming with the Playstation controller, so thats where the Playstation for me tops the Xbox.
With all that said, PS3 has a cell processor which has not even been used to it's full capacity, not even close. Developers are learning to use the cell processor's power to it's full ability, therefore providing more graphic intensive, and complex gameplay. With Xbox360, it feels like it's general ability has peaked, and there isn't much more for it to show.

Anyway, that was my two cents (or ten), and I really hope that the PS3 comes out on top next year, because I would probably never get a 360 even if Sony went out of business and the 360 was the only console out there.

I must give a "yes and no" answer. If anything, Nintendo is the one with the proven track record. When the home video game market was in trouble back in the eighties, it was Nintendo who nearly singlehandedly saved the video game industry and gave it a fresh start. Sony jumped into the ring and started the first round of the console wars in the nineties and Microsoft came in with the Xbox in early 2000s. To say Sony has the proven track record, I will give it points for introducing variety of games. Microsoft led the way to online game play. Frankly I think Nintendo should be the one to be praised for introducing innovative ways to bring the gaming experience to the next level.

digifan nintendo has only casual kiddie games.Only two series are not for casual gamers zelda and mario, mario a bit. They must stop to make casual games.Look at the past ps2 had better games than ms and nintendo. The gamecube and the xbox died and the ps2 live on.The same thing will happen in the future.

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It's very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass' favor.

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it'll do even better in those areas, but for now it's a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod's strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.
